When I applied for this course I was just a woman with the crazy idea of building my own log home. Never held a chainsaw in my hand, ever….
Your information, advise, encouragement and practical demonstrations was so energetic and helpful that I now KNOW that I CAN build my own home!! I met new people from all walks of life, different occupations, male and female. I felt part of something bigger that just learning about log homes.

Thanks for the course it was great. It just emphasized once again that I can do this. I am a lot more comfortable about building log homes and I hope I don’t sound arrogant but it is a lot easier than building the traditional way for sure and basically anyone with a bit of go in them can actually do this….. well that is what I took away from the course.
Of course there are loads of important information that I did not know and as they say we are never too old to learn. I must say when we arrived I was actually overwhelmed by the size if the structures. A picture cannot explain the massive size of everything. That said by day two it felt natural and was easier to take in. It also feels safe and secure and of course inside your home it is extremely comfortable and homely. I can easily live there.
Once again thank you, I now have a lot of food for thought. I was considering traditional, steel frame and log homes as an option for our property in Hoekwil. The reason for the course was to way up and see what is best for me. Right now, I am leaning more towards your method of construction.

Jetta and I enjoyed the course immensely and you left us with the confidence to tackle the building of our log home by ourselves even at the ripe age of nearly 70!
I personally learned so much from you not only how to go about building a log home but also how to approach many of my everyday projects by simplifying things instead of getting bogged down by trying to over engineer everything.
I have for months been struggling with how to replace the roof on my farm house in the Karoo and now after your guidance I am confident to apply the same simple methods you taught us and will use eucalyptus logs as the beams, etc.
I have located a good source of trees that I can select for our log home and they will be felled for me by the owner.
I have to debark and remove the logs which is exactly what I am looking for.
I am now gathering the equipment needed and who knows we might be starting our project before long.
I am looking forward to join the forum and hopefully share some ideas.

Thank you again for a great weekend with you and Cathy.
I am finally safely back at work (my official job in the DRC)… Myself and Alison did enjoy the course very much and we are already busy on our scale model.
I did the ground floor and left her to do the 2nd floor and roof.
We have also staked out the proposed building, and the land will cleared during this month.
Drawing of the plans will also commence soon and then we can start construction.
Of course, in the meantime we will start to “collect” the building material.
It is quite amazing how many suitable trees are out there for building the structure… (We had a good look at all the trees next to the road on our way back home).
I will keep you posted on our progress, and might even call you when I get stuck…… As for you course...
It was very well presented and myself and Alison enjoyed it very much, and we both are very excited about your “out of the box” building method.
My dad was in the building industry and I therefore have a very good understanding of conventional brick and mortar construction.
What I do appreciate about your course is that it is all good practical, sound and proven advise, and of course your house is a perfect example thereof.
The fact that you go beyond the construction is also a big plus…… I came to the course with a basic floor plan of what I wanted, but changed it after the weekend.
It is now more suited to my plot, easier to construct, and still enough to make it a “wow” place.
When I got home after the course I bought the material for the scale model and started planning, and then I realized what great advise it is to do a scale model first because it forces you to plan, plan and plan again.
I’d spend a whole afternoon on planning and once I got going on constructing my model it went really quick – (Took me an hour to build the ground floor).

The fact that you built your own home and could therefore match the theory with real experience was very helpful.

Just to say thank you and Cathy so much for opening your house to us from the very bottom to the very top, and in 20 too short hours, teaching us how to build an entire house.
Although I am a practical handyman myself, I learned so many practical tips that you make building a log home seem easy.
And each tip is worth the course fee alone.
I didn’t take many notes because everything was so obvious to me and I already had a good idea of what you were talking about.
It is so obvious that it is one course that I will never forget the contents.
I know that I will always be able to build a log home from memory.
I know my notes will come in handy though because you managed to cram an incredible amount in to two days.
I am very excited to join your online community and to have access to other people’s experience.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience and for giving me an incredible and worthwhile weekend.
I feel empowered, that I will never have need of shelter, or of an occupation again.
My knowledge and skills base in my field have increased enough to be comfortable offering to build shelter for people now, instead of only aesthetic treework, which is not much in demand in a recession.
My love of trees has broadened and I look at gum trees with new eyes.
Although it was only yesterday, I think it is safe to say that your course has changed my life.

Wow what a great course!
I think this is going to pay for itself many times over.
Busy designing on Google Sketchup.
I would recommend this to everyone.
I found it a bit of work to get used to, but once you get going it becomes very valuable.
The tutorials available on the net are worth going through.
By drawing to scale I have discovered important lessons thus far regarding proper planning.
I hope we can all stay in touch via the forum (look out for Treehugger - that's me!).

The planning is the second hardest part with the negotiation and bargaining for the materials etc in my opinion the hardest.

All I would like to say about the course is that anyone looking to build a house needs a course like yours before they make that lifetime commitment to debt.
I wish I had known about it at the beginning of the year, before getting the site.
Anyways, it's a lesson learnt.
The course and the information was adequate for me to now engage in my building project that I've been dying to get on with, it's given me confidence.
I always wanted to build a unique kind of a house and this is it.

Hi Roy
All I can say is CONVERTED!! Stuff the bank and getting another mortgage.
Only got back this afternoon but already visited two scrap metal dealers, one timber yard, spoken to someone who has a log cabin nearby about getting plans approved, and set up a meeting with a mate who fells trees in an effort to find a second hand Bandsaw mill.
Luckily I have numerous Gum tree plantations within a 5km radius of my small holding.

I think it is a good idea if the men take their wife’s along to do the course, as it gives them a better understanding of what you want to do and therefore you have more support from them boosting you to build them a nice solid log home and they will not mind when you spend money to buy the right tools.

I really did enjoy the course, and of course, I learned a lot.
I'll be building as soon as I can organize logs and get plans drawn etc.
Regarding the course, one of the best features for me, was the tour of your home to see how you have done things.
The theory is important and your presentations cover the topics well, but for me, real-life application of the theory is in many ways more helpful.
I appreciated the tour the most, followed by the informal discussions.
I always seem to learn more outside of the 'classroom'.

I was maybe hoping for a little more practical exercises, but as the theory covers so much I understand there isn't much time left for actually practicing the skills.
After the course I felt both a bit overwhelmed as well as very enthusiastic to start building.
I am very grateful that we have the possibility to build up some experience with the other guys who are building in Jeffreys Bay before starting with our own house (hopefully next year).

I am happy that you also think on similar lines.
I personally feel that the course content was carefully selected and presented to the participants in a very well structured way.

Personally speaking I knew nothing about the construction of any type of building.
Since you started from the scratch it was not difficult to understand the things you explained.
Your personal experiences with different Govt.
Offices and companies were very revealing.
I could not have understood the 'tricks of the trade' had you not told us about how to make out expenditure as low as possible.

You are the one genuine guy i have ever met.
Your family has such a quiet and peaceful spirit “maybe it’s the log cabin that humbles them that way) i mean your wife and son they are so sweet.
If it’s the effect of the log i really need a log home ASAP.
kidding.
No one in this day and time allows total strangers in their homes, but you guys warmly welcomed us, and i must thank your wife for this.
my wife could have said we should have the seminar in the garage.
( sorry she is not that bad) but honestly from the bottom of my heart guys i really enjoyed your company.
As for the course it was awesome, i learned so much, i enjoyed the practical part of measuring and cutting the log, that is difficult .
( i must say it was my first time to use the chain saw).
Once again Roy you showed how much you love people and how concerned you were about our safety.
It’s only a person who is concerned about people that will stress about the wellbeing, for you i have learned it’s not all about money, but it’s for the unselfish reason of passing the information and allowing people to make informed decision.
