Stompie stove

How to make a quick and efficient log stove - the log home builders way

Putting the 'Fast' into breakfast.
Great for camping, really cheap and quick to make, uses minimal amount of timber.
Use pine, which is absolutely useless for your Braai.
Clean and relatively safe, will not blow away in the wind.

How to cut the stompie stove

Cut 2 slots into the end of a log as shown here and then cut the piece off the end of the log.

Step 2. (1 minute)

The finished product should wind up looking like this, if it takes you more than 30 seconds, you are being lazy.
Stuff some newspaper and some kindling down the slots.
Do not pack the slots too tight, this will restrict the airflow to the center. You are now about 1 minute into the job and the stove is
ready to light.

Step 3.

Light it.
Within a few minutes you can put your frying pan on, with your favorite species of boerewors.
The log begins to burn from the inside.

After cooking my entire breakfast for 3 people there was still a lot of heat left in this fire, I still needed coffee. Without it breakfast would not be complete.
Simply cut 3 pieces of steel conduit pipe as extension legs for your potjie.
Boil water, cook stywepap - whatever. What more do you need?

If I had more cooking to do, I could keep going, maybe remove the extension legs from the potjie when it burns down low or add more fuel or both.
The log is still burning, but stays cold on the bottom and can be picked up, there is also no fire marks left behind, you don't even have to clean up afterwards - excellent, in fact I go so far as to say this can be considered 'acceptable' (the highest possible compliment).

A couple of points:

  1. Preferably use a frying pan with a non combustible handle, definitely not plastic, remember it gets hot!
  2. You can make a really big version as an oversize 'candle'.
  3. Use a well dried piece of timber, I used pine, which as everybody knows is absolutely useless for for making a braai (barbecue in foreign lands).
  4. If you are going camping, you could make up a whole lot of these in advance.
  5. Take all necessary and sensible safety precautions when cutting the timber with your chainsaw.
  6. Even though is is a really safe way of cooking, never leave your fire unattended.
  7. Warning. Never ever burn treated timber, such as poles, fence posts, etc. The CCA treatment administered to these timbers will impregnate your food and poison you. While I'm on it, NEVER use treated timber for making any fires or cooking food, even outdoors or in an enclosed stove. Please take some time to read this website, which contains plenty of information. Apparently a 50mm X 150mm X 4meter CCA treated plank contains about 27 grams of Arsenic, enough to kill about 200 adults. You have been warned!
